An Inside Look at How Bubba Rope is Made

I took a trip down to the Bubba Rope offices in December and they showed me ropes in each stage of the amazing production process. I snapped some pictures so I could post them. Each picture is labeled with a number so you can read about it below.

1. Bubba Rope starts with a double braided 100% nylon kinetic energy rope. The inner core is looser and actually does the majority of the work in standard recovery situations. The loose braid is much of what gives the rope it’s famous stretch for smoother recovery.
2. The more tightly braided outer jacket serves as somewhat of a protector while the inner rope does the work. At about 70% of the ropes strength, the outer braid kicks in to assist. You’ll notice that the rope started white and pure. They told me to keep a look out for knock-off ropes that are just made with dyed black nylon instead of put through the same process Bubba Rope goes through.
3. Bubba Rope is dipped in a polymer base and warmed for 24 hours in a heat locker to give it a one-of-a-kind water, UV, and abrasion resistant coating. With normal ropes, straps, etc. – dirt and particles get into the woven fibers and act as little abrasive sandpaper weakening the fibers when it’s moved and used. The Bubba Rope coating protects against the elements so it doesn’t lose strength over time.
4. Each eye of the rope is spliced to military specifications. They use roughly five feet of rope to make it because it’s woven back into the rope so far (about two and a half feet). Here you can see that they are able to customize ropes by dying the eye hooks one of five colors.
5. Finally, they apply a high performance elastic polymer coating to both eyes to provide protection performance that exceeds those of synthetic fabric coverings. This process, called Gator-izing because the finish is resembles alligator skin, prolongs the life of the rope even longer.

Bottom line: My visit to the Bubba Rope offices further convinced me that Bubba Rope is the best recovery product on the market. There’s a reason why there were so many entries into our contest (which is now over).
